Mustard Fish Curry Using Physically Refined Rice Bran Oil

Fish and mustard are an important and very popular combination for Bengali cuisines. With the ability to impart a flavorful aroma, it brings back nostalgia to every fish lover. Most Bengali cuisines strike the perfect balance between rituals and celebrations and Mustard Fish Curry is one of them. 

This specific dish is not just distinctive but carries a strong flavor with a creamy texture- just as most Bengali dishes prepared with the best edible cooking oils in India. This dish is popularly prepared with Kachi Ghani Mustard Oil, but physically refined rice bran oil is also an option to consider. This cooking oil keeps every dish light and also offers a seamless blend of antioxidants that keeps one healthy inside out. Most individuals often label fish to be a difficult dish to prepare at home, but this one is an exception. Follow these easy steps and choose the right ingredients for a flavorful and authentic mustard fish curry.

Ingredients

For the Mustard Paste

  • 1 ½ tbsp black mustard seeds
  • 1 tbsp poppy seeds
  • 2 tbsp yogurt
  • 2 tbsp grated coconut
  • 2 green chillies
  • ½ tsp salt

Procedure

  • Soak the mustard and poppy seeds in ¼ cup warm water for 15-20 mins along with salt. Further add the yogurt, grated coconut, and chillies in a mixer along with 2 tbsp of water and grind it to a fine paste. 
  • Marinate the fish with ½ tsp turmeric powder and some salt.
  • Heat oil in a pan and add the nigella seeds and green chillies.
  • Once they crackle, add the ground mustard paste & the turmeric powder. Chilli powder, and salt. Saute the mixture for 7-8 mins. 
  • Add 1-1 ½ cup of water. Check the seasoning and add sugar or salt as per the taste. Allow the mixture to come to a boil.
  • Add the marinated fish and allow it to cook for 7-8 mins on a medium flame. Simmer it till the sauce thickens. 
  • Enjoy delicious Mustard Fish Curry with steamed rice.
